Behind the Scenes of Another Outstanding Year
The Japanese American Service Committee has always been, at heart, a community organization. The board of directors and staff know that it is the energy, commitment and dedication of our members and the JASC
o munity at large that help drive the agency forward each year.
During this past year's 60th Anniversary celebrations, hundreds of community members of all ages volunteered thousands of hours of their time and energy to make our events memorable, meaningful and enjoyable for all.
Here are just a few examples of our many volunteers in action. We hope you had a chance to enjoy the fruits of their labors (and those of the staff and board) during our 60th Anniversary events.

Origins of Now:
ReBuilding Community
An extensive series of programs to highlight and celebrate JASC's 60th anniversary year was planned by a committee of board and staff members.
Partnering with the Japanese American Citizens League OACL), Chicago Japanese American Historical Society (CJAHS), Chicago Arts Partnerships
in Education (CAPE), Asian Improv aRts Midwest, Fujima Ryu of Chicago and Tohkon Judo Academy, a full year
of special events was presented to the greater Chicago community. The programs served as a first look into Japanese American culture and history for many, and a re-establishment of roots, values and heritage for those in the Japanese American community.
To focus our celebrations, an exhibit exploring the question Why is there a sizable Japanese American population in Chicago? was mounted. Using information, artifacts
and photographs mostly pulled from JASC's Legacy Center archive, the historical component of Origins of Now: ReBuilding Community took shape. Alongside it, an
installation of contemporary art created by Chicago Public School students added
depth and emotion. An estimated 4,000-5,000 people -many of whom were learning
about the history of Japanese in America for the first time -toured the exhibit.
While these special events were being planned and held, JASC continued to
deliver high quality social and wellness services alongside its cultural and heritage
programming and classes. The board and staff successfully completed about 80% of
the Year 1 objectives from its strategic plan, and all remained focused on the three
long-term goals:

developing JASC as a destination center;
•
continuing to reach out to the dispersed Japanese American population and broader community; and
•
providing leadership in a consensus-building, facilitating manner.
Core Services
Since its founding in 1946, JASC has
maintained a focus on providing much
needed services to seniors. All of the agency's social services and wellness programs have in common a goal to allow seniors to maintain their independent living at a high quality of life for as long
as possible. Originally founded to provide support to Chicago's Japanese Americans, JASC now serves a multi-ethnic population.

Five areasof needs (psychological and cultural, safety, social, financial, and service and assistance) were identified, barriers and strengths were examined, and potential approaches and strategies for effective interventionswere defined. The planning of the Wellness Outreach services continues.

Exercises, craft projects, games and other group activities are conducted by the staff. A hot lunch, provided by the Chicago Department of Aging's Golden Diners program, and served by staff and volunteers, along witha morning and afternoon snack, keep the seniors energized during the day.
Staffnurses continually evaluate the participants' daily performances, and work closely with family members

JASC's Counseling department provides a variety of programs to
support whole-person well-being, from individual therapy sessions to ongoing group activities. An average of 26 clients each month participate in the various programs.
JASC is able to provide psychotherapy to individuals and families in Japanese and English. Therapy sessions are reimbursed through Medicare for qualifying clients.
The Jukunenekai support group at Heiwa Terrace, led by a volunteer, had eight attendees, on average. Eight senior women regularly attended the Out of the House group twice a week. They are led through exercises, crafts and group activities. They also just spend time talking with each other, an opportunity they would not get sitting at home alone.
Home Support Services is JASC's longest-running program. Staff
members provide housekeeping services, as well as much-needed
social interaction and emotional support to seniors living indepen
dently. Many of the program's clients live alone in apartments at
Heiwa Terrace in the Uptown neighborhood. This past year 2 3 3
clients were served a total of 4,675 hours and provided with personal
care, housekeeping, shopping, escort and related services.
Cultural Programs
JASC continues to be a vital resource for people interested in learning more about Japanese culture or pursuing excellence
in their chosen art or sport. Cultural classes -including cooking, Sumi-e,
Taiko, judo, dance, Tai Chi, Japanese language, Shamisen, ceramics and Origami -attract hundreds of people of all ages and ethnicities to the JASC each week.

Community Center
Having a meeting place, whether for
a few or hundreds at a time, is a vital resource in any community. For Japanese
Americans, JASC fulfills that role. Besides providing organizations with a place to meet, worship, dance, rehearse and learn, JASC is host to community-wide events like Kodomo Matsuri/Holiday Delight and
Kagami Biraki New Year's Celebration.
Legacy Center
Known to researchers, historians and
educators as a local treasure trove of Chicago's Japanese American history, the JASC Legacy Center and staff serviced 101 research and referral requests and
accepted 3 5 donations this past year.
The collection includes documents, photographs, publications and artifacts donated by members of Chicago's Nikkei community. The vast majority
of the material used for reference or

told the story of Americans of Japanese descent, from immigration, through World War II, to resettlement in Chicago. Although the exhibit spanned a 60-year period, a large portion was devoted to trying to understand and illuminate
the rebuilding of lives, families and community here in Chicago, for this
was our unique story of perseverance, acceptance and triumph during a time of
open hatred and racism.

JASC once again partnered with
JACL and CJAHS for the annual Day
of Remembrance program, this year presenting historian Greg Robinson, author of By Order of the President: FDR and the Internment of Japanese Americans.
The Origins of Now exhibit could not have been accomplished without the support of many partners (see page 13), but it was the involvement of CAPE and teachers and students at Mark Sheridan Math/Science Academy and N orthside College Prep that
added emotional depth to the historic exhibit with their creation of sophisticated artwork reflecting what they had learned from interviewing some of our community leaders who had lived through the racism, forced

It is amazing that just a year ago we were looking forward to commemorating our 60th anniversary, envisioning the Origins of Now: ReBuilding Community exhibit and performance series. This was a year
that exceeded expectations and had some wonderful
surprises such as the visit from former U. S. Secretary
of Transportation Norman Mineta, for our program,
To Honor the Resettlers. This was a year of making
meaningful memories enriched by bringing together
longstanding friends and new friends in special and
successful collaborations. In addition to our primary
partners: Asian Improv aRts Midwest, the Chicago Japanese American Historical Society and the Chicago
Arts Partnerships in Education, there were many more
individuals, groups, organizations, corporations and
foundations that made our vision a reality.
It has been a rare opportunity to learn about our beginnings. Everything that I've learned has deepened the pride and respect that I have for the Issei and Nisei leadership that rebuilt the community and made Chicago our home. What also impressed me about our founding leadership, is that they were committed to the values of collaboration and diversity. In the annual report from 1946, it is clear that the board and advisory council were intentionally diverse in race, ethnicity, gender and religion. These are values that we, at the JASC, are committed to today.
Everything this year was conceived and developed with that same commitment to collaboration and diversity. It was not just an exhibit -it was an unprecedented combination of history and artistic interpretation -it was a performance series, a mural project, a dynamic ongoing initiative. us the momentum to pursue that vision. When the vision is inspiring, compelling and important, people are attracted to making the vision a reality. We feel
so fortunate that this happened in so many ways this past year. There is a Japanese word, "kimochi," which means feeling. A lot of kimochi has developed this past year. It is at the heart of our efforts to redefine and rebuild our community today.
While these exciting and public cultural heritage programs were going on, we were also quietly accomplishing another initiative that is just as important in our mission to serve the community
we made a qualitative assessment of the health access issues of Nikkei elders. Thanks to continuing support from United Way, and with valuable consultation from our Community Advisory Board, we will be planning an expansion of services based on what we learned.
So often our community has been buffeted by waves of racism and national tragedy. We have had to deal with circumstances beyond our control. To survive we have had to draw on our resilience, our fighting spirit, our "gaman," our endurance and our persistence in order to rebuild our community. The JASC has adapted
and changed in order to serve the changing needs of the community. Whether through social services, or cultural heritage programs, we have the strength as
well as the flexibility to serve the community into the
future. Today, we are in a position to create positive
waves, to celebrate diversity, to share our rich culture
and heritage and to expand our community.

It was wonderful to reconnect and celebrate with so many old friends and acquaintances at the numerous programs and activities throughout the year. It is also important to recognize the fact that it was through the collective efforts of many people, staff and volunteers, partners, companies, corporations and organizations coming together that made last year the success it was.
I want to take this opportunity to direct your attention to the relationship between all the activities, programs, and services highlighted in this year's annual report and the various initiatives outlined in JASC's strategic plan. The Board and staff continue to use
this living document as the guide by which we use for all our planning and implementation. I hope you can ent throughout all the work we do and provide to the community.
Our near term plans are indeed ambitious as we identify new ways to broaden our capabilities for impacting more people. Additionally, we continue to assess
our physical space to determine how best to create a
facility that can truly be a "Destination Center" for
the community. Change is very much in the air at JASC as we continue to make improvements and adapt
to the changing environment in which we operate.

Strategic Plan Long-Term Goals
1. Destination Center
Create a destination center whose design showcases Japanese culture and tradition. The space will be flexible in use and be designed to accommodate a variety of programs and services.
A variety of highly professional programs, services and events would be offered at the center, with specialized programming being developed for families, children, teens, young adults and seniors. Concurrent use of
the facility by different groups would be fostered,
so that all members of the community can feel comfortable utilizing the facility at any time, and the environment helps build, not fractionalize that feeling of community.
2. Outreach
Reach out to the dispersed Japanese American population, offering broader services, partnering/coordinating with other organizations to share resources and consolidate efforts. This includes the development of the infrastructure and capacity needed for the support of outreach programming.
To meet the needs of a Japanese American population scattered throughout Chicagoland and the Midwest, satellite programming and services would be developed. The expanded staffing, communication, transportation and facility needs required to deliver and support these new programs would also be developed, so that they provided an alternative delivery site for some of the programs and services located at the destination center.
3. Leadership
Provide leadership in a consensus-building, facilitating manner among all Japanese American community organizations, and look for a commonality of purpose and opportunities for collaboration.
As the largest non-sectarian locus of Japanese Americans, and the organization with the most community resources, the JASC will strive to collaborate and coordinate with other community organizations for the betterment of all. The development of teens and young adults into community leaders will be another organizational focus.

Isolated Nikkei Elders Assessment Project
Through this qualitative assessment project, the JASC sought to take a deeper look into the needs and strengths of isolated Nikkei elders. Reaching out across a wider geographic area and to engage participants who could give us a comprehensive view was essential to the effective completion of this study. Attempting this feat would not have been possible without the cooperation and support of many local Nikkei organizations, groups, and individuals. The JASC is grateful for their generosity.

Flight Pattern Floor Mapping:
Students designed a grid map to tape onto the JASC floor,
creating flight pattern-like representations of the forced
movement of)apanese Americans. The mapping moves from
homes on the West Coast (red circles) to internment camps
(orange squares) and finally to resettlement in Chicago.

• The students were made aware of the history of Japanese
Americans during World War II by interviewing Japanese American commmunity leaders who had lived through these experiences. From their interviews students learned
that the forced migration had permanent effects, not only on the Issei and Nisei who had experienced it, but also on the future generations of)apanese Americans .

This is why there is still a relatively large
population of Japanese Americans in Chicago.

For almost 11 years former Executive Director Jean Fu jiu was the face of the JASC. She represented the organization at private and public functions and gatherings in the Japanese and Asian American communities, as well as to the city at-large.
Jean also was a visible participant in agency and community activities, attending not only as JASC's leader, but as an individual truly interested in Japanese American culture and history, who wanted to learn, listen, see, do and preserve the legacy left to us by our forebears.
But more importantly, Jean's was the hand at the helm as the agency grew its cultural programming and embarked on strategic partnering initiatives with other
organizations. In doing so the JASC's reach expanded, and for the first time people outside the Japanese American community were coming to its exhibitions, performances and programs. She helped poise the agency for a sea-change.
The JASC board of directors, staff, members and others within Chicago's Japanese American community are indebted to Jean for her untiring work on our behalf. This is the type of debt that can never be repaid, but we can say, Domo arigato gozaimasu, and wish her the best of fortune in all her future endeavors.
Four years ago the board of directors and staff members of the Japanese American Service Committee met to discuss the future of the organization. Of paramount importance was addressing this question: How could the JASC remain a vital and vibrant organization in the wake of the imminent passing of the founding generation of Nisei?
Led in great part by the vision of former Executive Director Jean Fujiu, it was determined that to remain relevant in today's society, the JASC would need to be systemically transformed from an ethnic-based organization to an extroverted, inclusive one. It must remain an agency where Japanese American culture and heritage is preserved and cherished, nurtured and grown, and social services are imbued with Japanese American values, but all activities would be open and directed to the greater multicultural community in the Midwest.
This shift in paradigm requires that we overcome the weight of 60 years of organizational history and over 100 years as immigrant Americans with very real reasons to remain unobtrusive, blending in with our fellow Americans. It would require that the JASC not only literally open its doors to all interested parties, but loudly proclaim, "We are different;
we are here."
As an organization in the midst of such decisive change, we are working to fulfill our three primary strategic goals. We are learning to become the JASC we need to be. And we are Gaining Momentum.
Create a destination center whose design showcases Japanese culture and tradition. The space will be flexible in use and be designed to accommodate a variety of programs and services.
A variety of highly professional programs) services and events will be offered at the center, with specialized programming being developed for families) children) teens) young adults and seniors. Concurrent use of the facility by different groups would be fostered) so that all members of the community can feel comfortable utilizing the facility at any time) and the environment helps build) not fractional1ze that feeling of community
Adult Day Services (above and right) is the "home away from home" for some 20-30 seniors each weekday. This model program does not use televisions to entertain seniors.
Staff members and volunteers engage them in discussions on current events, and lead seniors in peer-to-peer group games, exercise and other activities that help stabilize their mental, physical, emotional and social well-being. Staff nurses work
closely with family members to ensure that the needs of our
seniors are being met, at home and at the JASC.
Our current facility has been described as "having an ambience somewhere between a l 970's light-industrial warehouse and your grandmother's sewing room." But what
the JASC Community Center currently lacks in decor, it more than makes up for with energy, sustenance, acceptance, and programs of substance.
No matter what time of day or day of the week, the JASC is bustling with purposeful activity. It holds a special place in the hearts of thousands of people of all ages and ethnicities who visit it on a regular basis -whether that basis is daily, weekly, or annually.
Tampopo Kai (right) is a unique bilingual, bicultural Japanese/English program for preschoolers. Many of
the 30-40 children and their parents are Japanese nationals. Other children are Japanese American, of multiple ethnicities (Hapa), or not of Japanese ancestry at all. Whatever the case, they all share, learn, dance, sing and play in an accepting and caring atmosphere. Poignantly showcasing the value of the JASC as a mixed-use facility, the Tampopo kids perform for the Adult Day Services seniors on Japanese and American holidays.
TREASURES
from the Legacy Center
The JASC Legacy Center is an archive and library that collects, preserves and makes historical resources from the Japanese American community in metro Chicago available to others for research and reference purposes. This past year, staff members provided reference services to over 100 individual researchers and groups, taught off-site archival workshops, and contributed to the national on-line Discover Nikkei project. The preservation and
use -for research and educational purposes (left) -of historical documents, images and objects from the Chicago Japanese American community is a matter of prime importance to the JASC.
Social Work services can take many forms. JASC's licensed clinical social workers provide individual and group counseling, and provide outreach services to isolated seniors. They also plan care with seniors and their families, and, unique to JASC, follow-through to evaluate care and intercede as necessary. The activitybased Out of the House program (left) emphasizes keeping seniors physically and psychologically healthy.

The JASC is the de facto Community Center for Japanese Americans in the Chicagoland area. Each December hundreds gather to do a little specialty shopping, eat great food, have fun, and just get together at Holiday Delight/ Kodomo Matsuri (above and top right).
Hundreds come to the JASC for more than just fun and food. Our biannual Health Screenings (right) and free flu vaccines (in conjunction
with the Chicago Department of Aging and the Chicago Department of Public Health), help community members stay well. The JASC also serves daily hot lunch to seniors as a member
of Chicago's Golden Diners program, and hosts special presentations on insurance for seniors and an AARP driver safety course, offered in both Japanese and English.
With Tohkon Judo Academy, JASC is the site of the annual New Year celebration Kagami Biraki. It is a day-long celebration starting with the traditional steaming, pounding (right) and rolling of sweet
rice into the dessert mochi. A Shinto purification ceremony, Japanese drumming, judo demonstration and potluck feast complete the event.
With its commitment to cultivating Japanese culture in America and making it our own, the JASC offers classes (left, top to bottom) in Sumi-e (ink painting), Shamisen
(Japanese 3-stringed lute), Origami (paper folding), Japanese cooking, and also Taiko (Japanese drumming), Shinobue (Japanese flute), Ikebana (flower arranging), Tai
Chi and Japanese Language .
The JASC also serves as home to a number of cultural partners and community organizations, including the JASC Tsukasa Taiko, Fujima
of Chicago ( classical Japanese dance,
Ryu bottom right), Tohkon Judo Academy (below), Northside Friends, Stir Friday Night! (Asian American improvisational comedy troupe), Nisei Post no. 1183, Thursday Dance group, New Horizons, and Cooperative Investors.
The Japanese Mutual Aid Society, Leadership Center for Asian Pacific Americans Community Leadership Program, Kyushu Kai, Asian American lnsitutue, and Asian Giving Circle also used the JASC for gatherings this year.
Reach out to the dispersed Japanese American population and beyond, offering broader services, partnering and coordinating with other organizations to share resources and consolidate efforts. This includes the development of the infrastructure and capacity needed for the support of outreach programming.
The expanded staffing, communication, transportation and facility needs required to deliver and support satellite programming and services would also be developed, so that they provide an alternative delivery site for some of the programs and services
located at the destination center.
For reasons that probably lie somewhere between politically-motivated racism
and democracy in action, there has never been a "Japan Town" or "Little Tokyo" in Chicago. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, some Japanese Americans continued their migration into middle class acceptance by joining the "White Flight" to the suburbs, further dispersing the ethnic community.
The JASC has always been about coming together. Reaching out is a newer development. Through our research initiatives, cultural performances and educational efforts, we have begun this part of our journey.
Home Support Services (left) provide essential in-home help to seniors to allow them to maintain their independent living. An average of 20 seniors were provided with basic housekeeping duties, shopping, meal preparation and/ or escort service each week.
Funded by the United Way Chicago Metropolitan and
Suburban Venture Investment Funds, JASC conducted
an Isolated Nikkei Elders Assessment
Project. The initial report (left) was released this year,
and work continues on planning the delivery of the
services most needed by isolated
seniors in the city and suburbs.
JASC continued its outreach into the community, participating in the National Night Out against
Crime with the 23rd Police District Diversity against Violence parade and community gathering (below).

American community organizations, and look for a commonality of purpose and
opportunities for collaboration.
As the largest non-sectarian locus of Japanese Americans, and the organization with
the most community resources, the JASC will strive to collaborate and coordinate with ,
other community organ1zations for the betterment of all. The development of teens and young adults into community leaders will be another organizational focus.
Taking a leadership role within a self-effacing community is a tricky thing. As the Honorable Norman Mineta told us when he visited JASC, when he was contemplating a decision to enter public life in San Jose, his father told him to do what he believed right, but that he should be prepared to be "the sticking up nail."
Organization-wide, the JASC is standing up. Within
the Japanese American and greater mudi-cultural community in Chicago, our goal is to partner with others who would also strive to make a difference, and bring positive change to individuals and society in general.
We are seeking to provide leadership, but are committed to doing so on a collaborative basis. Our focus is on growth, learning and the betterment of all, and in this effort we will not be bent.
The JASC was able to collaborate with Nisei Post no. 1183 in hosting
a Go for Broke National
Education Center presentation with General Eric Shinseki (Rec., above), and with the Chicago JACL chapter to host a town hall meeting (left) with the National Parks Service regarding proposed
uses of a government appropriation to honor the Japanese American World War II internees.
The JASC Community Mural Project (above) brought rogether people of all ages, each with his or her own reason for becoming involved in paying homage to the Japanese American experience. Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education was an invaluable partner in helping this dream project become a reality. The JASC partnered with Tohkon Judo Academy, JACL and the Asian American Law Enforcement Association in another wonderful Community Picnic, which was
a great day for all, although, fittingly, more
so for the kids (right and top right). The JASC Legacy Center continues to work
on documenting the stories of those who lived through evacuation, internment, and resettlement in Chicago. With Nisei Post
no. 1183, Chicago Japanese American Historical Society, and Asian Improv aRts Midwest, the JASC is also preparing a local component (below) to be shown alongside the national Military Intelligence Service exhibit, which will be in Chicago in 2010.

I am proud and pleased to report that JASC in 2008 did not experience any semblance of a "sophomore slump" or similar letdown after such a successful 2007 during which we celebrated our 60th anniversary. In fact, if I could be so bold as to say that we matched or topped 2007! As you will see from this year's annual report, our past fiscal year can best be described as one of growth and change.
The JASC board of directors and staff continue to work closely together toward refining our programs and services in ways to better serve the community. During the past year, we welcomed new additions to the staff that assist us in far-reaching capacities: a new Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a new Controller, new Adult Day Service activity leaders, a new Marketing and Development professional, a new receptionist, new staff for Home Support Services, and a Cultural Programs Curator.
Our growing team allows us to provide direct services and cultural programs to more people in the community and at increasingly higher levels of quality. With each passing year, JASC receives more recognition for the work we do and the success of our outreach efforts is continuously exemplifi ed by the new people we welcome through our doors at 4427 N. Clark Street.
While the economic climate continues to challenge families, businesses and organizations alike, I am optimistic that JASC is well-positioned to make the necessary adjustments for us to continue advancing our quality social services and cultural programs in ways that impact an even broader audience. Please stop by and witness first-hand the energy going into making all this possible.

Dear Supporters,
While there have been a few changes within the organization in che past year, one thing chat has not changed is our commitment to deliver consistently strong client service while also ensuring that the back office operations are managed as effectively as possible. We'd like to speak to those areas in a bit more detail.
As it relates to our social services programs, we remain focused on providing an outstanding client
experience. In addition, we are working hard to ensure that our program supervisors are coordinating
effectively with each ocher for potential cross referrals, while also pursuing new ways of obtaining social
service clients so chat our programs can operate closer to capacity.
In the area of culcural classes and programming, we are striving to increase the quality of the instruction
while maintaining our diverse class offerings. We have seen increased accendance recently for many of our
offerings, including Japanese Language classes as well as Tampopo Kai, our children's program. We also
continue to host a variety of other culcural activities, such as book signings.
In terms of administration, we continue to enhance che quality of our financial and management reporting.
We have developed new management reports that allow us to beccer monitor and understand our
performance. On the development side, we have identified a number of new funding sources and will be
looking to significantly increase che number of grants we will be writing for in the coming year.
As a staff, we remain strongly commicced to carrying out the agency's Mission and working with the board of directors, members, clients, guests and community members in true partnership.

Our ADS program provides seniors who require supervision a safe and active environment where their chronic illnesses can be managed and monitored. We provide professional medical care in a socially active environment where they can exercise and sustain their physical and cognitive well-being. These services also benefit family caregivers with much needed respite which decreases stress-related illnesses, work absenteeism, loss of employment, and family instability and dysfunction.
Socia( Work Services
Our Social Work program offers linguistically and culturally competent licensed social workers who assist people from all over the Midwest. Individual, family and group counseling provides emotional and psychological support and focuses on strengthening coping skills to deal with issues such as intergenerational relationships, language and cultural difficulties, health challenges and preparation for death and dying.
'}[ome Su_p_port Services
Home Support Services (HSS) assists seniors, many of whom are disabled or suffer from a chronic illness, in their homes with household tasks such as cleaning, planning and preparing meals, grocery shopping, transportation to doctors' appointments, and picking up prescriptions. Homemakers help with personal care tasks such as dressing, grooming and adhering to special diets. Homemakers also assist seniors with translations for personal business (medical, legal, financial).
Out-of-tfie-'}[ouse
Out-of-the-House addresses the needs of seniors who live alone or with family members, but are isolated during the day when their caregivers work or are isolated due to geographic location. Most have lost their social network of friends because of illness, frailty or death and use this group as their network of connection to peers. Out of the House offers exercise, socialization and activities which are directed toward keeping the seniors active and from isolation; well documented causal factors associated with early nursing home placement. In addition, our social work staff provides group counseling sessions that address some of the key mental health and wellness issues of seniors.

JASC is committed to building quality cultural programming, classes and events that not only preserve the culture, history and legacy of Japanese Americans, but also keeps them living, developing and relevant in our contemporary cultural milieu. JASC has done this, in part, by fostering, partnering and collaborating with masters and experts in Japanese culture.JASC offers these masters support through its artists-inresidence program, which encourages them to continue to expand mastery of their arts, provides them with a means to showcase it to the greater community, and creates environments where their skills and knowledge can be passed on to others, of all
ages, ethnicities and economic backgrounds.
'The Le,qacy Center
The JASCLegacy Center is a community-based archive and library that collects, preserves, and makes historical resources from the Japanese
American community in the metropolitan Chicago area available for research and reference purposes. It seeks to preserve and promote
community heritage and common understanding of the Japanese American experience as an integral part of American history through the
collection of books, letters, diaries, oral histories, newspapers, magazines, ephemera, films, photographs, dissertations, etc. that document the Japanese American experience before, during, and after coming to the Chicago area. During an average year, the Legacy Center provided
reference services to more than I 00 individual researchers and groups and conducted archival workshops.

Adult Day Services (ADS)
Our ADS program provides seniors professional medical care in a socially active environment where they can exercise and sustain their physical and cognitive well-being. These services also benefit family caregivers with much needed respite which decreases stress-related illnesses, work absenteeism, loss of employment, and family instability and dysfunction.
Social Work Services
Our Social Work program offers linguistically and culturally competent licensed social workers who assist people from all over the Midwest. Individual, family and group counseling provides emotional and psychological support and focuses on strengthening coping skills to deal with issues such as anxiety and depression, language and cultural difficulties, health challenges and preparation for death and dying.
Home Support Services Home Support Services (HSS) assists seniors and adults wanting to stay in their homes with household tasks such as cleaning, planning and preparing meals, grocery shopping, transportation to doctor appointments, and picking up prescriptions. HSS also supports young professionals who are too busy in their careers by
managing tasks such as housekeeping, laundry and grocery service.
Out-of-the-House
Out-of-the-House (00TH) addresses the needs of seniors who have lost their social network of friends because of illness, frailty or death and use this group as their network of connection to peers. 00TH offers exercise, socialization and activities which are directed toward keeping the seniors active physically,
mentally, and emotionally.
Arts and Culture Programs
JASC is committed to building, preserving, and promoting Japanese and Japanese American culture and heritage through: the Legacy Center archive which preserves Japanese American history, cultural classes which enrich and educate the general public, and an artist-in-residence program which fosters growth of Japanese and Japanese American artistic tradition.
Legacy Center
The JASC Legacy Center is the largest publicly accessible archive and repository on Chicago Japanese American history, with particular emphasis on the period following World War II, when Japanese Americans were released from wartime internment camps. Its focus is to preserve and showcase these valuable archives while educating the public through local and traveling exhibitions and workshops.

Cultural Classes
JASC is committed to building quality cultural programming, classes and events that not only preserve the culture, history and legacy of Japanese Americans, but also keeps them living, developing and relevant in our contemporary culture. JASC has done this, in part, by fostering, partnering and collaborating with masters and experts in Japanese culture. JASC offers these masters support through its artists-in-residence program, which encourages artists to continue to expand their mastery, provides them with a means to showcase it to the greater community, and creates environments where their skills and knowledge can be passed on to others, of all ages, ethnicities and economic backgrounds.

Tampopo Kai provides Japanese language and cultural education for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and
their parents by laying a strong foundation for Japanese language at an early age and nurturing the
beginnings of a positive ethnic and cultural identity through cultural activities that are responsive to the
